New Moon Breaks NZ Records!

Twilight: New Moon NZ's biggest opening weekend ever.

Kiwi Twilight fans have helped the vampire romance franchise into New Zealand box office history by giving the latest film the largest opening weekend ever.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon knocked previous record holder The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King off the top spot with a mammoth NZ$2,641,109 haul during its first four days of screening nationwide.
"We are absolutely thrilled with the result," says Elizabeth Trotman, general manager of the film's New Zealand distributor Hoyts.

"We knew it was going to be big, but we had no idea it would be the biggest opening weekend of all time. Especially considering it opened outside of school holidays, this is an exceptional result.
"The fans have responded really well to New Moon and a lot of theatres have told us some have been to see the movie multiple times over the weekend."

New Moon placed third on the all-time North American box office opening weekend chart with US$140.7 million. The top two spots there are last year's US$158.4 million Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight and 2007's US$151.1 million haul for Spider-Man 3.

The all-time top five opening weekends at the New Zealand box office are as follows:

The Team Converts...

Been hearing this a lot: "Team Jacob - cause he looks better half naked".

Ouch. Although I sorta agree. Couldn't they have given Edward/Rob a chest wax? Sure some girls dig hairy chests...I'm just not one of them. I heard a few "ewwws" at the premiere screening in Auckland. It was sad! As much as I love Taylor and his awesome abs, I don't want Edward to be beaten out by Jacob! NO!

So come on Rob - opt in for a chest wax. LOL. So superficial, but what a difference it makes to the storyline - doesn't it make it more understandable why Bella would love Edward (apart from not being able to choose who you love) over Jake?

Oh well - I'm one who can learn to deal. I just hope there's no more "ewws"...imagine if all the Rob lovers just suddenly became Taylor lovers....and people going to see the film hoping that Bella would choose Jacob.

*sighs* and rant over.

Review: New Moon. EPIC. spoilers

I just got home from watching New Moon and I'm absolutely buzzing.

I absolutely LOVED it. I remember sitting through Twilight for the first time and absolutely cringing - took me the second time to warm up to it - but very few cringe-worthy moments this time. The cast and crew did a fabulous job!

WARNING - possible spoilers...I'll try and keep it quite general

I know they can't stay absolutely true to the book, but I thought it stayed pretty close to the book IMO.

Some very quirky lines thrown in there - Billy Burke, crack up as always :D
Kristen was less awkward. Robward was less cheesy. I love Jackson's smile. Alice had more or less the same amount of scenes in the book.

Obviously a few unexplained bits in the film that you would get if you've read the book. I had to do a good deal of explaining to my brother after the movie. They had condensed a good chunk of the 'draggy' bits, but nothing that really takes away from the story.

Let down of the night? The F*CKEN FANGIRLS! Okay...I love the hype and all, and the giggling at appropriate moments...but these girls were giggling at the "Summit Entertainment" logo intro. ...hmmm....seriously?

And of course I was seated to this horrendous banshee laughing girl. She was the worst. And she would be a solo laugher. Oh I felt I was going mad. I wanted silence.

No CD - that Edward gives to Bella - she only got a kiss for her birthday.

Rosalie's hair bugged me...but I knew that before going in. The wig just doesn't work for me, even though I wouldn't want to Nikki through bleaching again. Just thought I'd say...

Best part...no cheesy run-through-the-woods special effects - I thought Chris Weitz did an amazing job with the wolf pack.

Aro was funny...he's like this oversized kid or something.

The end of the birthday night broke my heart - even more than the actual break up scene did.

Not sure if the vampire tearing up scene was quite PG.

Oh and there was this hilarious scene that Aro sees through Alice of Edward and Bella playfully running through the woods. So cheesy....so not Bella and Edward lol.

Hmmm what else....oh the school carpark scene! Edward the supermodel rears his head. That was such a cute scene. Oh the sexual tension...in more than this scene...in the end of birthday night scene too.

There's a lot that I've missed out...can't possibly remember everything at 3.30am.

After watching this...I'm finding it hard to stay on Team Edward - cinematically, Jacob is just sooo much hotter than Edward (LOL). So Rob needs to up the anti cause Taylor was smokin'! There was even a round of applause when Jake took his shirt off to wipe up Bella's blood.

I heard some girls whining that the movie was crap. I mean seriously?...did you even watch the same movie that I did? did they expect back-flippin flying monkeys or what?

I'm itching to go and see New Moon again!!!! Better than Twilight - hands down!!

When Close Up presenter Mark Sainbury said "Werewolves - bare-chested beefcakes...." I started PMSL. It's just not something you'd expect him to say....hehe.

I don't think this is Close Up exclusive..it *may* be taken from odd interviews...I really don't know, I haven't been watching much behind the scenes New Moon stuff cause I just think it will ruin the movie if I think about it too much - you know my expectations could possibly set me up for a downfall.

Kristen: "objectively from the outside she (Bella) should be with Jacob. She's best friends with him, he's warm and it's easy, there's no problems there. But you can't always take the easy way."

Rob: "Edward is much more of a worrier. Not a warrior, a worrier (laughs) and Jacob isn't."

Rob just cracks me up with his aloofness. He just comes off as a big dork to me. Perhaps that's his charm?

TV3's Kate Rodgers got to interview Rob, Kristen and Taylor in LA recently.

Not since Harry Potter have we seen a book series as popular - 52 weeks at the top of the New York bestsellers list and counting.

Unlike Potter though, we have far more hormones at play here. Twilight fans are passionate ones, as are a good many of their mothers.

Much of that passion is centred on a Vampire, played in the films by British actor Robert Pattinson.

Just the mere mention of Pattinson's name is enough to throw legions of Twilight fans into a breathless swoon. The fact he plays a vampire doesn't seem to lessen his appeal, in fact, as with his Twilight girlfriend Bella, it only appears to add to it.

Reflecting the hype for the movie, the marketing junket juggernaut for New Moon is enormous, and it seems everyone wants a bite of Edward Cullen.

So what is it about this Edward Cullen that has us all in a lather?

"I guess his strengths are, he's very humble, I guess that's also his weakness as well, the more he falls in love with Bella, the more he sees her as a vision of perfection and doesn't feel worthy of her at all.

"He's such an enigma in the books, such a blank canvas, people can project what they want."

New Moon is the young Brit's second Twilight, and since the first he's been fan-mobbed akin to the Beatles. The sequel will only up the fan ante.

"You just always have to remember what or if there is a reason to be doing what you're doing," says Pattinson. "I still find I have a reason, which I can't really express, ha ha.

"It doesn't make me unhappy. There are times when it's really annoying, but I guess that's the only time you really have to change, with the fame and all that stuff, it's not too bad."

For those of you who have been living under a rock and perhaps haven't heard of the Twilight story, it's the tale of a normal self-possessed young girl called Bella, and her love affair with a Vampire.

In the sequel New Moon, things get a little more complicated. Pattinson isn't the only cause for palpitations in the film.

We have in the Vampire corner Team Edward, while in the Werewolf corner, Team Jacob.

Adding more throb to the heart of this new Twilight story is Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob, Bella's other man.

"Jacob is light, he cares about her (Bella), she just wants to be herself and have fun, so different to what she experiences with Edward," says Kristen Stewart who plays Bella.

"I love they start out as best friends, it grows into something more," says Lautner. "They are both good for Bella, protect her, loyal to her, just a question of left or right."

Jacob also enjoys howling at the moon, and has issues with vampires.

"It required me to go to some deep dark places," says Lautner of his role as Jacob. "The best thing I did was know the books inside out, because that's what the fans want to see."

So is Lautner getting the same treatment from fans that his co-star's are getting?

"We're travelling the world right now," he says. "Everywhere we go we same number of passionate fans, it's comforting, if we were making these films without them it would be a little scary."

But it's really Vampire Cullen who is the ying to Bella's yang, a ying-yang the tabloids would have us believe is reflected in the real world.

Stewart may or may not be Pattinson's girlfriend - a question expressly forbidden to be asked of either of them during these interviews - but she was certainly prepared to put her body on the line for this movie.

"I stepped on a rock, a part of the movie I wasn't even in, I stepped on a rock and sprained my ankle," says Stewart.

New Moon opens in New Zealand next week and more than 30,000 fans have already pre-booked tickets, and a good many have been busted hugging Edward Cullen posters in cinema lobbies.

And just for the record? Yes he is that hot in the flesh. Go Team Edward.

...At the Twilight movie, you need to visit Liz on LJ @ Unscrew my head. Don't get me wrong, I adore the Twilight books, I just think the movie was such a let down. So below average despite good intentions. But despite that, I have come to love it - we mindless fans just don't question, and heck I couldn't do any better. Anyway, Liz will tell you why the movie was just so awful. It's funny! Who couldn't use some light hearted comedy?

Of course, don't visit if you can't deal with Twi-haters...there are more than a few Twi-hating comments.

Oh I had the biggest dilemma today at Whitcoulls courtesy of Creme magazine...I couldn't choose between the Team Edward or the Team Jacob cover!!!! What the Forks! How can you guys expect me to choose?! Are you serious?! And of course I couldn't really talk myself into buy them both seeing as the content was the same with the only difference being the cover...although it probably wouldn't be that hard if the little devil in me wasn't so exhausted from sitting the Film exam earlier this morning. You should've seen me. I was a zombie. Oh gosh I hope I passed!!

Halloween...

So what did everone get up to for Halloween? Me...I was home ~~cramming~~ studying for my Film exam after working all day..so suckie. But I guess NZers, as a nation, don't celebrate Halloween like the Americans do...would be cool if we did! We still have the increasing numbers of trick or treaters amongst the kids and the odd Halloween party, but nothing too major. That'll be my goal for next year...have a full blown Halloween party. No dressing up as Twilight characters. It's not that there's anything wrong with it if you're that way inclined, but I just think that the characters aren't costumy enough for it that's all.

Enough of my ranting...
Asheley Greene just looks absolutely AMAZING. Kellan too...but maybe lose the cape? then I'd be drooling all over my keyboard.

Rant time...

This clip reminds me of why I'm ultimately on Team Edward. I love Jake too, but the voice over dude in this clip just totally reminded me why I'm Team Edward - cause lets face it, after having Twilight become such a huge part of your life you can start to forget the reasons why you like certain things. Why am I Team Edward? because he's the only one who will risk everything for Bella. Sure Jake loves Bella, but I remember he can't give up things Bella asks him to out of selfish desire while Edward does. Edward is all about Bella. Jake is more about "it's more normal/natural to be with me than be with a vampire". Jake is realistic, but who needs realism when you have romanticism?

The Twilight juggernaut is propelling the 23-year-old British actor to the heights of mega stardom and, having previously only played minor roles, most notably as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he is making the most of it.

The small independent movie, Remember Me, was able to go ahead as the result of his casting and Pattinson is now in Unbound Captives, a western set in 1859, where the world's sexiest youngster gets to act alongside the "Sexiest Man Alive", Hugh Jackman.

"The Twilight fans are so devoted, even fanatical, that I'm now able to do so many films," Pattinson says. "The economy is just so bad at the moment. I don't care if they think I'm right for the part or not. I can get their movie made, which is great."

The trim actor says what has happened to him has been "pure luck." After all, handsome Henry Cavill, who made a dashing impression in TV's The Tudors as Henry's friend, the Duke of Suffolk, had been Twilight author Stephanie Meyer's original choice to play Edward Cullen, the lovelorn vampire who falls in love with the human Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart).

But Cavill was too old by the time the blockbuster movie went ahead and Pattinson won the role instead. "I never set out to achieve anything, certainly not fame like this," he admits. "I still have to deal with how to actually make my life work."

The obvious comparison regarding his ascent to stardom is with Daniel Radcliffe who, even if he gets his gear off on stage, will forever be known as Harry Potter. Like his fellow Briton, Pattinson has gone against the puerile grain of Twilight to appear in gay sex scenes for his portrayal of the Spanish painter Salvador Dali in Little Ashes.

Pattinson hopes his Twilight role will leave him without the typecasting that Radcliffe will surely face. "I worked on Harry Potter for 11 months and I couldn't imagine doing that for all those years. I don't know how those guys have stayed sane. I would go completely crazy, hardly being able to do anything else for so long."

Pattinson was contracted to do the four Twilight movies and once Eclipse wraps up in Vancouver, only Breaking Dawn remains to be filmed. "They were all filmed quickly and painlessly," he says.

Unfortunately, due to an extension of the filming schedule of Eclipse, Kellan Lutz, Michael Welch and Charlie Bewley will not be able to attend the Twilight Tour in Melbourne and Auckland. They all send their regrets and are looking forward to coming out in the near future and seeing you all soon at another Hub event. We are, however, very pleased to welcome Christopher Heyerdahl, who portrays Marcus of the Volturi, and the adorable Bronson Pelletier, who plays Wolf Pack member Jared.

I'm sorry ~ is anyone else like me: I don't like Bella's Lullaby in Twilight.
I just think it's not right, it's so cinematic. And I mean yeah it is made for cinema....but...it falls short of what I expected. And almost a year on from hearing it in the movie, I still can't get it. It just does not work for me.
Maybe cause I fell in love with Yiruma's The River Folows in You first?
I wish, WISH they would change the current Bella's Lullaby. Anything but the current Carter Burwell orchestra version....Don't get me wrong, I like the Carter Burwell version too (with just piano), but it just doesn't tug on the heart strings like Yiruma's does....I just can't imagine it for Breaking Dawn.

Personally, depending on how well word spreads (cause it's not stated on their website the exact details, I only know through email subscription, and I'm only spreading the word even faster...), I expect tickets to sell out pretty fast. We'll see I guess. Oh and not to mention the poor NCEA kids have exams on Nov 19!! that's so sad. I'm glad my uni exams will have been completed by then....*rubs it in ya noses*

Twilight and/or/vs Vampire Knight

Was just thinking when I came across this - those of you who read manga or watch anime should've heard of Vampire Knight...right? I started reading it earlier this year and it's pretty good, I don't like it as much as Twilight though IMO - You know whatever floats your boat and all. I didn't realise the whole Twilight vs Vampire Knight discussion was in full flight. Seems like if you don't like Twilight, you just don't like it haha.

Edward sparkles, so what?! I dunno, some people focus on the little things. Like Bella being a bit needy. Lets just say that needy is meant to be romantic. LOL.

So back to Vampire Knight...if you don't know, it's a story about a human, Yuuki, who is in love with her saviour vampire, Kaname (your typical vampire that does not sparkle). Well that's how it starts out anyway...it's still incomplete (FYI mangas are serialised). It's set at Cross Academy where day class means class for humans and night class is for vampires.

For Twilight, I'm just a fan of the love story, characters and the friendships. I've never been big on the whole vampire thing. Same goes for Vampire Knight. I just think Kaname and Zero are smexy. LOL. Something about the manga drawings is so lustful (*giggles by herself in front of laptop*)

wanna check it out? I like the manga so much better than the anime...the anime, like the Twilight movie, tries too hard to be comedic I think. You can google "Vampire Knight and Twilight" and you'll find a bit on that discussion.

This is what I wake up to? Can the Twi-craze get any whackier?

Aerial photos show that two separate "Twilight"-themed maze patterns at Black Island Farms, 3178 S. 3000 West, have already been cut into the corn — a "Team Jacob" and a "Team Edward." (In the movie, Bella can choose Edward or Jacob as her boyfriend.)

The lettering "New moon 11-20-09" is also a part of the maze.

A side design in the corn depicts a KUTV reporter or anchorman holding a microphone.

GPS technology is used to cut the intricate patterns into the corn.

The idea of a corn maze is to enter and then eventually conquer the labyrinths by finding the lone exit. Getting "lost" is part of the fun.

Black Island is a working vegetable farm, with about 400 acres in cultivation, growing carrots, onions, cabbage, corn, pumpkins, squash and gourds.

Interesting 'doco' (is it a doco? i dunno) on tv the other night here in NZ...
20/20 had a segment about vampires living in New Zealand. Yes lil ol NZ.
One guy sleeps in a coffin and has porcelain capped fangs and another girl needs warm human blood as her energy source.

Interesting is the word alright. Anyways, can't embed the vid so will have to head on over to tvnz on demand to stream it (hopefully it works outside of NZ?)

So it's been a while huh? glad to get those damned exams out of the way (finally!) gosh Chaucer was seriously starting to get on my nerves. Seriously, how can anyone understand what Chaucer is saying?!

Also on a side note, I just wanted to point out my new affiliate (*look to the right of the page*) MyAnime! My new found obsess- ehem I mean interest. It in no way replces my twi-obsession though! EW has released an exclusive look at the New Moon Movie tie-in book cover. And wow. It is smoking! (not in the literal the-cast-likes-to-smoke-sense)
I really like it. I like it far better than the movie poster for it. And I like it way better than the Twilight film-tie in! Everyone get how much I like it now? cool :)

I'm Team Edward (all the way) but that doesn't stop me drooling at how damn hot Jake looks!
Bella's tank top stumped me at first - makes the scene look so *intimate* and isn't it like um freezing in Forks? BUT then again Jake is hot like a furnice - or was it heater?
Edward is so spooky in the background with the moon that is obviously not a new moon.
And then there's the Wolf Pack in the background on the rocks - I seriously thought Gollum from LOTR when I hadn't looked closely at first.
But Nah I really like this cover. I wonder how many diff posters/covers/calendar etc versions they'll have this time since they have a bigger budget.
Ohh and you know I wonder if they'll have those massive cut outs and displays at the cinemas like they always have for Harry Potter!

Just Jared Jr reports:

Twilight starlets Ashley Greene and Kristen Stewart lead the pack of guys behind them as they finish up lunch at Pizzeria Trattoria Marechiaro in Padova, Italy on Saturday afternoon (May 24).

Ashley, 22, hung out by the pool after lunch and got a bit sunburned while Kristen, 19, hung out with friends.

All I can say is...it looks a heck of a lot warmer filming in Italy than it did when they were in Vancouver (duh) - must make such a nice change for them...not having to coat up with layers and layers of clothes and all ;)

Peter Facinelli Outlasts the Rest of the Cast

What he had to say:

"I love night shoots. Everybody else is [tired] by like two, three in the morning, which is weird because I'm the old guy!" Facinelli tells PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past on Monday night. "They should be the ones that should be like party hardy all night long," jokes the 35-year-old of his young costars including Robert Pattinson, 22, Kristen Stewart, 19, and 17-year-old Taylor Lautner. "At five in the morning I was like, 'I could go another 10 hours!' And they were like, 'Crash!' " "The first [film] we were just hoping people went to see it. We knew there were diehard fans and those are the ones we're like, 'Let's make a good movie for [them],' but we didn't know the diehard fans were going to explode into the amount that they did," he says. But the father of three insists he's nothing but grateful for the fan-demonium. "I feel loved by so many fans, like I went to Disneyland the other day, and I took like 100 pictures just walking like 10 feet … you want to give back to them."

When asked about tattoos:

"I only have one right now, but I definitely plan on getting more. My friends and I were kind of the bad kids in school, the troublemakers. We went to Interlochen Arts Academy, this really great boarding school in Michigan, and there were six of us who were always acting out against authority. The school administration was like, "Stay away from those boys-they're ‘Lost Boys,'" so that's what everyone called us. When I was 18, I got a tattoo that says, "I'm lost."

Rob Lands Lead Role In Remember Me

MTV is reporting that Rob has landed the lead role in the upcoming movie Remember Me.

"While Robert Pattinson is deep into filming the "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" for Summit Entertainment, the studio has tapped the 22-year-old British star for another project about star-crossed lovers.
Pattinson will play the lead role in "Remember Me," a story of a young couple whose burgeoning relationship is complicated by a succession of family tragedies that test their bond, according to ScreenDaily.com. The makers of the film, which had previously been titled "Memoirs," have not yet settled on which actress who will play Pattinson's love interest"

Sounds like the making of a great movie - I'm interested.

Hell yeah! okay it's not even up for discussion as far as the big bosses are concerned. But Melissa Rosenberg made a suggestion in an intervew with E!'s Mark Malkin -

“There’s a very big battle at the end with Riley, and I think Channing would do that so well…And there are some complexities to that character,” she adds. He really is tragic. He’s a puppet for Victoria. So he has to break your heart a little bit at the end when he realizes that she doesn’t want him. Channing could do that beautifully.”

And she talks Edward in New Moon -

“In the book, he’s actually an enormous presence in [Bella’s] mind,” Rosenberg said. “He’s so present in her mind throughout the entire center of the book, so we really played off that, and it kept him alive in a slightly different way, but fans will feel it’s true to the book. You can’t have a Twilight without Rob Pattinson.”

They went for sushi, she playfully hopped on his back, then when she realised she was being papped, she quickly jumped off. The two continued on their way all awkward and sh-t. She looks great, right? Very pretty, beautiful skin. Happy.

Am told exclusively that they spent a romantic weekend together – Michael arranged for accommodation at a different hotel, with an open ocean view, and they were able to escape for a day from the crowds waiting outside all the time."

But I'm really glad she's happy, she deserves to be after all this Twilight happiness we get off here =)

This cuteness… it’s killing me.

I was the first to tell you about Taylor Lautner and Selena Gomez last week – now more exclusive details about their adorable weekend date.

Saturday night: they had dinner at the Cactus Club in Coquitlam, emerged in great spirits, both with big smiles on their faces, Selena held on to Taylor’s arm. At one point, after they had become separated and she fell behind to sign autographs, she ran back up to join him, throwing her arms around his neck, both bursting into giggles.

I'm wondering what everyone else thinks? They do make a cute couple. They have the same big smile - I don't know if it's a good or bad thing *raises eyebrow*
Taylor has definitely come a long way...that's for sure!

There's a pretty awesome interview Nanaimo Daily News has with Cameron Bright. I just wanted to post this so we could all get a feel for this actor that has just newly joined our Twilight world. He seems like a pretty humble and grounded guy. Which is fantastic in my books =)

The 16-year-old Nanaimo actor will play the vampire brother of Dakota Fanning's character in the next three sequels of the popular movie.

wow, just wow. I sat here watching this clip with the biggest, goofiest grin on my face. I don't know why but I seem to be getting like that a lot these days - I think it's the Rob/New Moon fix =P
Anyway, some awesome footage from the ET coverage of the New Moon set - some we've already seen before, some brand new footage. I like it, it's a very coherent vid compared to the others which were snippets of sneak peek previews. This actually seems almost like start to end.

The Independent have an interview with Rob Pattinson about his film Little Ashes. Here's a snippet:

According to Pattinson, he sees playing Dali as a turning point in his career. "To not betray or insult someone's memory, it seemed a lot more important than other jobs I've done before," he says. "I definitely felt I had a lot of freedom when I was doing for various reasons." Still, how does he think the Twilight fans will react to his love scenes with Beltran? "I think girls" – at this point he can't stop himself from a smutty chortle – "almost really like watching something like that. From what I've read, people really get excited about that – it sounds really sexy!"
Inevitably, since Twilight came out, speculation has surrounded Pattinson's own love-life, linking him with numerous starlets, including 10,000 BC's Camilla Belle. "I don't really care about it," he shrugs. "I have the same little set of friends and I don't have anyone who would really get affected adversely [by false rumours]. Every single person who they sort of romantically link me to... I just don't even really know anyone. So it doesn't really affect me that much." Is there any truth to the persistent rumour hooking him up with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart? "Er, no," he states. "I don't understand where that even comes from."
Certainly, when Pattinson tells you that things haven't "really changed so much in my head" since Twilight came out, you can believe him. Willing to please, he carries the bewildered air of someone who still can't quite believe what has happened to him. Yet it'd be unfair to dub him "lucky", for his is not simply a case of 'right place, right time'. When he was 17, he decided against going to university – not that he got accepted to any, mind – to carry on with his acting. He immediately won a bit part in Mira Nair's Vanity Fair, followed by a more substantial role in Ring of the Nibelungs, a TV film inspired by Wagner's Ring cycle.
Raised with two older sisters, who, he has previously admitted, used to dress him up as a girl and call him Claudia up until he was 12, Pattinson's upbringing sounds comfortable. His father, Richard, deals cars and his mother, Clare, used to work in a model agency. It was his father who suggested Pattinson get involved with amateur productions at Barnes Theatre Company. "That was only because he saw a bunch of pretty girls who were going to it, and said: 'Hey Rob, you've got to go to that.' That's the reason I still do it!"
Pattinson knows that the female attention will not diminish with the Christmas 2009 release of Twilight sequel New Moon. He's pleased it doesn't feel like a mere money-spinner. "It feels like we're making a stand-alone movie." He's even at ease that his life is going to be turned upside down once again, having accepted how impossible it is to control his public image. "You can never be known for what you want to be known for," he notes. "People will know you for whatever they want to know you for." For a 22-year-old, that's surprisingly perceptive.

I'm glad he has finally realised Twilight for what it is and is actually riding it rather than letting it get to him.

I’ve interviewed David Slade before, and he’s a very smart, charismatic guy who harnesses some immense filmmaking tools. That said, I definitely thought “30 Days of Night” was a disappointment. It had a lot of fatal flaws in it, usually whenever the blood would stop flowing and it was time for us to actually start caring about the characters. “Hard Candy” also flirted with moments of brilliance, but I still feel like Slade’s best work is ahead of him.

What I am beginning to enjoy, however, is Summit’s decision to hire a different director for each film. Which is surprising, because I was definitely hoping that Catherine Hardwicke would oversee the entire series after the first “Twilight” became such a big hit. But if you’re a movie buff (and not just a Twilighter first and foremost), this is developing into a very interesting cinematic experiment.

And whereas Weitz seems likely to try and play things closer to Hardwicke’s blueprint, Slade is the kind of proudly defiant filmmaker who will want to shake things up a bit. For better or worse, the end result is going to be a trilogy of films filtered through three very different lenses.

Will Slade depict his vampires more violently than Stephenie Meyer imagined in the novels? Will he give such thespian-minded stars as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart the opportunity to dig deeper into the sadistic nature of Edward and Bella’s romance – or will his thirst for boy-friendly action push the film too far in the other direction? Most importantly: Does this mean that Josh Hartnett is gonna play Seth Clearwater?

Stars of vampire film Twilight to be in Geelong

Kellan Lutz and Edi Gathegi, who both play vampires in the
film, will make an appearance at Geelong's Gifts for the Geek store on Sunday.
The pair are in Australia for a Twilight convention tour.
Gifts for the Geek
is expecting 300 screaming girls at the Ryrie St store.

Shop owners said
they saw a lot of "disappointed girls" who could not get tickets to the
convention and they wanted to do something about it.

"There's a good fan
base in Geelong," organiser Darren Parker said.

Lutz and Gathegi will be
signing autographs from 2.304pm.

The session will allow for a quick meet
and greet.

Afterwards, a screening of the movie will be held at Village
Cinemas in Ryrie St.

Twilight merchandise has been flying off the
shelves at Gifts for the Geek.

"Twilight stuff has been the biggest
seller at our store in 12 years, and the Twilight umbrella has been our biggest
selling item of all time," Mr Parker said.

Back in 2001 Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone eked out a respectable billion dollars. Daniel
Radcliffe and the gang appeared on magazine covers and seemed set to take over
the world. And obviously they still could, as Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have
come along nicely as actors, and Radcliffe himself occasionally makes the news
for things that aren't particularly Potter-related.

However, right now
you'd have to say that Robert Pattinson has capitalized the most off of his
portrayal of Cedric Diggory, and he's not tied up in Potterland until 2011 like
the rest of the gang (spoiler!). Of course, he will be tied up with Twilight
until 2011, but he'll only have spent three years in the "Edward" shell as
opposed to the Potter Gang's decade. Additionally, he's now considered a sex
symbol, whereas Radcliffe is considered an icon. The difference? Audiences allow
their sex symbols to try new things (Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, Johnny Depp)
while icons are trapped into the character they originally became known for
(Macaulay Culkin, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Soleil Moon Frye).

I think the
reason is psychological. We expect those considered "sexy" to push boundaries,
to try new things, to challenge us. From our icons we want safety, comfort, and
the knowledge that they are always exactly what we thought they were. Which
means Radcliffe will likely never escape the glasses-and-wand look in our heads.
All of this adds up to Robert Pattinson being uniquely positioned to dominate
the next decade of film. He'll be set up to take whatever parts he likes. It may
not work out, as occasionally sex symbols burn out (see: Rourke, Mickey) but
you'd love to be his agent right now. And with that meandering third person
omniscient reference I'll digress.
